Course Description

Expert Barbara Griswold, LMFT will teach how to write brief notes that satisfy legal, ethical, and insurance expectations, in order to gain confidence in the event a records request comes in. She will outline new documentation requirements for telehealth. Barbara will introduce several note templates. The course will include sample progress notes with pointers for what “good” progress notes look like.

Educational Goals

This training covers the essential elements of therapy progress notes and what insurance companies expect to see in your documentation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify how vague, illegible, or notes written long after the session can harm therapists and clients.

  • Identify 11 common health plan documentation requirements.

  • Define the "medical necessity criteria" used by health plans to approve ongoing treatment, and how to document this.

  • Demonstrate the use of SOAP and other note templates

This course meets the qualifications for 3.0 hrs of law & ethics continuing education (CE) credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
